Retreat Presentation

by Fr Dominique Faure
Sunday 14th September 2008, 2:00 to 6:00 pm @ St Matthew’s Church

Topic: "The Importance of the Experience of Friendship".
Presenter: Fr Dominique Faure, of the Community of St John.

Fr Dominique is a renowned international preacher who was chosen by Mother Teresa to give retreats for her sisters. Now working in India with people suffering from HIV/Aids and orphans whose parents died of the disease, Fr Dominique is in New Zealand giving a series of talks and retreats.

Fr Dominique is a priest of the Community of St John, who has a wonderful gift for theology and philosophy. Mother Teresa asked him personally to take care of the spiritual formation of her contemplative sisters, which takes up much of his apostolate around the world. He lives in India, where he founded a house of his community, which is an AIDS orphanage and hospital. (He is looking for volunteers for it too, if anyone is interested!). He also founded houses of the brothers of St John in the Philippines and in the States. The order is a new one, (about 33 years old), founded by Fr Marie Dominique Philippe, a French Dominican.

He was a wonderful philosopher and theologian, and a close friend of Pope John Paul II. His students gathered around him and asked if he would form them into an order. Since then it has grown to include three branches: the Brothers of St John, which has about 600 priests and brothers (with a healthy 15-20 young new vocations per year!), the contemplative sisters and the apostolic sisters, which between them have similar numbers. The order is devoted to the search of the truth and the putting of it in the service of love for the Church. They open their lives in particular to the 'three wisdoms' - philosophical wisdom, theological wisdom and infused graced wisdom.

Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ---Corpus Christi

My dear Parishioners of St. Matthew's and all Visitors.

The Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is the solemn commemoration of the institution of the Eucharist.  It is the Church's official act of homage and gratitude to Christ, who by instituting this sacrament  gave us our greatest treasure--the food of eternal life.  In the synagogue at Capernaum , Jesus declares that He is the Bread of  life come down from Heaven. His words are treated with disbelief by the Jews who are unable to comprehend the deep mystery that Jesus is presenting to them ..Jesus explains that it is the Spirit that gives life and that the words He has spoken are spirit and life.
Jesus lived His life in communion with the Father and the Spirit and when we receive His Body and Blood , He empowers us to do the same..We draw our life from Him and so become co-workers in bringing His life to the world.
On this day may we experience joy and gratitude as we contemplate the Gift of the Body and Blood of Christ.

May God Bless each and everyone of you,

Father  Joseph.

Fourth Sunday in Lent March 2nd 2008

Fourth Sunday  in Lent    March  2nd  2008

My dear Parishioners and all Visitors,

In today's Gospel  the blind  man encounters Jesus who is the Light of the World  It shows this man's journey  from physical and spiritual darkness to the light of truth. On gaining his sight the man took some time to realize the wonder of his experience---he knew only that now he could see, not how the man Jesus had brought this about.  He defended Jesus against the accusations of the unbelieving Pharisees and was abused, insulted and cast out of the temple which was the ultimate disgrace.  It is only then that Jesus reveals Himself as the Son of God and the man in wonder worships Him.
We too can be spiritually blind, not unlike the Pharisees at times, but in our longing to know Jesus more we need to become conscious of our own blindness----we long to see and to know and be lead in wonder to the Truth.

May God Bless each and everyone of you.

Father Joseph.
